If you thought Pompey's first-ever UEFA Cup tie was thrilling, just wait for what's in store next.
After seeing off Vitoria Guimaraes in the first round on Thursday night, the Blues now find themselves in the hat for Tuesday's group-stage draw in Geneva (11am).

There are 40 teams left in this stage of the competition and they will be allocated into eight groups of five teams.

In a convoluted system only UEFA could think up, Pompey will play two teams in the group at home and the other two away.

The top three clubs will then proceed to the last 32, where they will be joined by the eight teams dropping out of the Champions League.

The intriguing part of Tuesday's draw, though, comes from who the Blues could meet next.

Teams are allocated to one of five pots based on their UEFA rankings – Pompey are in pot 4 – and the draw consists of one team from each pot being placed into each group.

Clubs cannot, however, be drawn with sides from their own country.

Looking at pot 1, therefore, means Harry Redknapp's men are guaranteed to play one of Benfica, CSKA Moscow, Hamburg, AC Milan, Seville, Valencia, Schalke 04.

And pot 2 will pit them against either Ajax, Stuttgart, Olympiacos, Deportivo La Coruna, Club Brugge, Spartak Moscow. Paris Saint-Germain or Heerenveen.

So get ready Blue Army – the European adventure has only just begun...

Be just our luck to get 2 teams out in the wilds of eastern Europe in the middle of winter.
Apart from that well done everyone for sundays game, I thought both Sol and Hughesie(who never got his usual card) were my men of the match--- both awesome. Sign up Belhadj as soon as we can.

who cares about UEFA's stupidity, some of those clubs we could be playing...Ajax, Milan, Benfica, PSG etc. etc. i dont care who we get, it's just so exciting to be part of this. would be nice to go the San Siro or something similar, but let's just take whatever we get and enjoy the experience.

I am not denying the sheer excitement of it. PFC Vs AC MIlan at Fratton Park!!! Just imagine!!

But the system. It's ludicrously stupid.

I'm interested in how they choose the groups I have to say. Group 1 are obviously the seeds, in which case, how are Spurs in there? It is due to a history in Europe? In which case, why aren't we in Group 5? Just be interesting to know.

We're probably one of those tricky dark horses that none of the big boys want to get out of pot 4!! how good is that?
I think pot 3 looks a lot more difficult than pot 2. I would like Shalke, Deportivo, Udinese and anyone other than Liege out of pot 5!

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
