Premier League champions Manchester United couldn't tempt him, neither could footballing purists Arsenal.
As for Aston Villa, the local club who play just down the road, not a chance.

For England starlet James Hurst there was only one destination – Fratton Park.

The talented full-back sparked a transfer scramble after declining to pen a new deal with West Bromwich Albion earlier this year.

An England under-17 international, the chase was on – and it was Pompey who emerged victorious.

Hurst was yesterday unveiled alongside 13 other new scholars who have signed up for the Blues' blossoming Academy, run by Paul Hart, right.

Such has been the impressive investment in youth, the tally is triple the amount usually welcomed into Fratton Park on the annual intake day.

And a delighted Hurst possesses no doubts he made the correct decision.

He said: West Brom wanted to keep me but as soon as Portsmouth came in I knew that's where I wanted to be.

'It's a club on the up. They're the FA Cup winners, a Premier League club with high status, a top-eight team. For me it's the place to be.

'There were others interested such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Villa but I would obviously get more of a first-team opportunity here than I would at the others so it made sense.

'It's a really good club and there's a new stadium and new training facilities on the way so it's going to be really exciting round here.

'I had been at West Brom since I was nine-and-a-half but it wasn't really a wrench to leave, I didn't really mind. I knew it was the right thing to do.

'There's plenty of us that have arrived this season, I am just one of many, and that helps you settle in. I'm already living in Milton and enjoying it.

'I even had a training session with the first team at the end of the season and that was fantastic.

'I just can't wait for the season to start now and I can get on with playing football for Portsmouth.'

Before pulling on the Pompey shirt, Hurst will get the opportunity to represent England under-17s in Sweden from July 28.

The Sutton Coldfield youngster has been named in the 18-man squad for the 2008 Nordic Tournament involving eight nations.

Finland, Iceland, Norway are all in England's group while Denmark, Faroe Islands, Scotland and Sweden have been placed in the other.

Ironically, former Pompey favourites Kenny Swain and Noel Blake are his England coaches.

And Hurst can't wait for the opportunity of getting more international football under his belt.

He added: 'I've been involved with England since last October and have been playing regularly at left-back.

'It's going to be great going out there and playing even more international football.'

Excellent news. Pompey is now an attractive proposition for young, talented players, rather than the 'last resort' that it was a few years back.

It would be great to see someone from the youth ranks break into the team at some point - the only one in recent memory was Gary O. But I can't see it happening for a few years at least.

do me a favour much as i do think we have made progress, why would any youngster in their right mind sign for us over man utd or arsenal! Even if our youth set up was as good as theres Harry doesnt even give youngsters a chance

Definitely a good signing. Yes, we realise that he will not be considered for the first team for a while but why does this proviso have to be expressed as if it is a negative factor. We should be thankful that the club have secured and are continuing to secure the services of many young players of potential. Had we been able to do this forty years ago we would probably not have spent as much time in the wilderness. Perhaps, PFC released this 'good news' item to counteract the reception given to the news yesterday that Sahar had joined on a six-month loan deal from Chelsea. Sahar's positive comments about the club were very much in contrast to the negative stuff which so-called fans were spouting. He is one for the future. I expect the reaction had more to do with 'Little or no' high-profile signings so far. Yes, we all want Crouch, SWP etc. to sign but that is no excuse for certain elements to decry team-building with the future in mind.

Neon, perhaps it is one positive aspect of being the FA Cup Winners. Perhaps it is the fact that Pompey are a team on the up. Maybe it is the lure of working with Redknapp, Adams, Jordan and Paul Hart.
Whatever, it has to be good news for Pompey.

In answer to Neon's question, I imagine that a youngster would stand more chance of making an impact at Portsmouth than at Man U or Arsenal. There has also been a dramatic change in importance attached to youth development at Pompey, as a recent two-page article in The News described.

All very well signing all these youngsters, but will Harry ever change his view on them and start using them like Arsenal & Man Utd. We used to think that the Carling Cup was our best hope of a trophy, but now that we are beyond that maybe Harry should start playing all the youngsters in that competition !!

Having supported Pompey since God was a boy, watched well over a 1000 games, and having seen them 4th from bottom in the old 4th division with such desperate fund raising measures as sponsering the pitch at 50p a square foot (when was that - mid 70's??) I would never have believed what I'm seeing now.

Ok nothing is perfect, and I just can't see us ever being able to compete success wise with the mega boys but hey we're big league ourselves nows and boy oh boy how I love watching them today compared with what's gone on in years past. Building for the future, training, ground, youth, three Pompey players on the pitch playing for England at the same time, other top players - we really never in my lifetime have had it so good. So for me, I just keep smiling.

Oh, and I wouldn't mind betting some of these kids make it!!

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
