Forty-five days have passed – yet the waiting goes on.
Waiting for the transfer merry-go-round to gather momentum, waiting for the recruitment drive to get out of first gear.

There's no getting away from the fact it's been rather quiet on the Premier League transfer front so far.

The eagerly-anticipated avalanche of big-money signings during the long summer months has yet to occur.

Pompey's glorious May 17 FA Cup triumph marked the end of the season – but ever since clubs have been noticeably reticent to put their hands in their pockets.

Before Chelsea's capture of Deco yesterday, a paltry 10 players had been signed by Premier League outfits – and four of those were by Fulham.

Even more of a surprise is just five of them had actually involved transfer fees.

Pompey fans may query a lack of new faces arriving on the south coast at present, but the upshot of it all is there are not many arriving anywhere.

The distraction of the European Championships coupled with the need for the footballing world to take a holiday has seen the transfer system grind to a halt.

At least Pompey have signed Glen Little – 14 fellow top-flight clubs have yet to recruit anyone. And to think, it's back to work for them all next week as pre-season training resumes.

Still, amid the lull there are at least some clubs who have bucked the curious trend and, in particular, the unlikely form of Bolton.

The Trotters' purchase of Swedish international Johan Elmander from Toulouse currently lead the way in the Premier League in a deal reported to be a club-record £10m.

Gary Megson also raided relegated Birmingham for midfielder Fabrice Muamba in a £5m deal, while Arsenal maintained their policy of investing in youth after winning the hard-fought race to capture Aaron Ramsey for £5m.

Rivals Spurs splashed the cash on Mexican attacker Giovani Dos Santos from Barcelona – and Croatian playmaker Luka Modric was already snapped up in a £16.5m deal from Dinamo Zagreb before the season was out.

So far, the only other player attracting a Premier League transfer fee was former Darlington goalkeeper David Stockdale, a £350,000 signing by Fulham.

Roy Hodgson's side have also welcomed Andranik Teymourian (Bolton), Zoltan Gera (West Brom) and Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough) – all on free transfers.

As for Liverpool, another club expected to spend big, their only confirmed recruit is Swiss defender Philipp Degen on a free from Borussia Dortmund.

Completing the six clubs who have so far entered the transfer market are Pompey, following Little's arrival barely 12 days ago.

It's been a quiet opening to the transfer window for a league flush with cash.

But with Euro 2008 over, and players arriving back from their holidays, expect the real deals to start very soon...

Pompey have conceded that Dunne will not be coming I think that they will have to concede that Crouch won't be coming either, Robbie Keen has told spurs he wants to go to Liverpool which will see crouch plus cash go the other way!! Why oh why do we take so long to put the offers in ? Especially when it is supposedly our number 1 target, we should bend over backwards to get them and then gamble on our "lesser needed" targets I can see us going into the new season with what we have and instead of onwards and upwards it will be stagnation.

After last seasons heroics, this is a worrying time, Yes, we won the FA cup and, Yes we are in Europe. The problem being apart from the big 4, there is 7 or 8 teams all on a par, and i can't see some of them playing as badly as they did last season, so we have to make out intentions clear in the transfer market and show that Pompey will be at the top of those 7 or 8 and pushing the top 4!!!PUP!!!

We like late deals so i wouldn't expect much to happen until the last moment ...Kranky, Defoe, Kanu all last minute deals. However, we want to avoid one of these loan scenarios like with Defoe - just get the paperwork signed and the cheque in the post!!

the article says it hs been very slow across the board, its clear everything has been held up by the euro's. so its not suprosing that deals are no happening till now. Yet everyone still panics. We made the offer for crouch and it was rejected, so its not like we were going that slow. Pre season games have not even started yet, most teams are returning to training this and next week. to we have two weeks or so yet before i would start to worry to much. I know its dull right now, but get some prospective.

Yer we made that offer last week, its obvious they want more money so why wait flippin ages, y not come back that same day with a bid a little higher, instead we wait ages and then other teams become interested, we either want him or we dont, whats waiting a week or two going to change, keep reading articles saying, "yer we want crouch but there asking too much money, so well have to see what happens" what the hell is waiting going to achieve!!

So everything you read in the papers is 100% true is it? Chances are Liverpool are trying to get more money out of Pompey by saying other clubs are intrested. But even if they are, doesn't mean Crouch will go to to Tottenham just cause they accepted an offer. Crouch should know he would be (along with Defoe) would be the first choice Pompey pairing for the new season. And should Harry use thr 4-5-1 formation he will be first pick as the lone striker (or should be). So people need to stop going berserk about nothing and start mouthing off when the transfer window actually closes. Chances are you will need the energy for the new season. PUP!!!

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
