Alan Templeman was in a celebratory mood after winning the first Allan Watson Freshwater Memorial Match.

But there was a tinge of sadness in the air at Lakeside Fishery, Cosham.

The match was originally being run and organised by Michael (Nobby) Hall – a good friend of The News’ former angling correspondent Watson.

But, sadly, a few days before the event, Nobby unexpectedly passed away.

The committee of the Portsmouth & District Angling Club, who were kindly providing the venue for the day, stepped in, however, to run the match in honour of both Watson and Hall.

And the 25 anglers who had booked in held a minute’s celebration for Hall before drawing their pegs.

The fishing on the day was hard going but eventual winner Templeman had no complaints.

His mixed bag of carp, bream and roach weighed in at a hefty 34lb 7oz and was enough to seal him victory.

He saw off the challenge of second-placed Mick Long with his 31lb 14oz.

Third spot went to Micheal White with a lowly 4lb 4oz.

There was an added prize of a Shimano rod and reel, kindly donated by Allan’s Marine and Terry Sears from Hallcroft Fisheries in Nottingham, for the captor of the heaviest carp.

This prize was won by second-placed Long, with his carp weighing in at a respectable 9lb 13oz.

Result: 1 Alan Templeman 34lb 7oz; 2 Mick Long 31lb 14oz; 3 Mick White 4lb 4oz.

Heaviest carp: Mick Long 9lb 13oz

Meanwhile, Matt Barnett was the overall winner of the latest MBK Leisures junior open match.

Fishing in the 13 to 16-year-old category, Barnett’s winning catch weighed in at 35lb 2oz – 7lb heavier than the haul of second-placed Karter Whittock from Froyle (27lb).

Third place went to Liss’ Joseph Orriss, fishing in the same nine to 12-year-old category as Whittock, with a catch of 25lb 1oz.

Following Barnett home in the 13-16 age-group category was Bordon’s Ben Renshaw with 24lb 8oz, while Dean Prior was third with 18lb 8oz.

In the nine to 12-year-old group, Petersfield’s Dan Parry (17lb) came third behind Whittock and Orriss.

Archie Jack, from Liss, won the under-nine’s category with a catch of 14lb.

Second place went to Callum Spiers (Petersfield) with 14lb, while Kai Glasspool was third with 13lb 8oz.

The next junior match is on Saturday, June 11, at Coloured Ponds, Rake.

The draw is at midday, with fishing from 1pm until 4pm.
