Organisers have promised to return after the inaugural Gosport Golden Mile and 5k race was lauded as a roaring success.

The event attracted a strong turn out in its first year and now looks set to become a fixture on the local running calendar.

Team Run-Fast’s Tom Payn took victory in the men’s race over a mile in 4min 17sec in front of team-mate Nicholas Kirui (4.30).

City of Portsmouth’s Karrie Blake showed she was in good form with victory in the women’s race (4.58), while Team Run-Fast’s Emilly Biwott was second (5.03).

City celebrated another win over 5k with Sian Hawkes victorious in the women’s race (19.54) in front of Suzanne Harding (21.39).

Southampton had a one-two in the men’s race when Matt Hibberd (16.42) beat Martin Johnson (16.55).

Race director Nick Carter said: ‘It was a brilliant day and surpassed all of our expectations. We’ll be back again next year.’
