HAVANT hosted a hugely successful track and field open meeting on Saturday.

The event, at the Mountbatten Centre, attracted a bigger turnout than ever before.

Havant coach Mike Williams felt the success could be down to Olympic fever.

He said: ‘We had the best turnout we have ever had.

‘It may well be because it is Olympic year.

‘We are really pleased and it was a very successful day.’

The mile race proved particularly popular with more than 20 contestants tackling the distance.

After the open event finished, it was over to the Havant athletes for the club championships.

It’s early days in the season as athletes warm up for the start of the Southern Athletics League on Saturday, at the Mountbatten Centre.

But Corin Reynonds, 23, delivered a particularly impressive performance in the 800m.

The Chichester University student produced a time of 2.15.6.

It was a great boost ahead of her Olympic Stadium date, when she competes in the British Universities & Colleges VISA Outdoor Athletics Championships next month.

‘It’s a good sign she is running so well this early in the season,’ said Williams.
