The curtain came down on the 76th Portsmouth Open as our local stars made it a clean sweep.

In the ladies’ singles event it was Milton’s Kath Patrick who retained the ‘Queen of the Green’ title after a closely-fought battle with Alexandra’s Tina Amps.

Patrick took an early 13-15 lead but Amps surged ahead 18-13.

But – with eight shots in three ends – Patrick secured her second title.

In the men’s event there were some surprises as Lakeside’s Robert Burn reached the semi-finals along with Matthew Marchant (Waverley), Brian Brown (Eastney) and Peter Alcock (Star & Crescent).

Marchant, who has captained the England under-25 team in the past, had little difficulty in beating Burn and was untroubled as he beat Brown 21-7 in the final.

Amps got revenge for her singles defeat in the ladies’ pairs as she teamed up with Alexandra’s Cathy Hunt to beat Patrick and Margaret Moffatt (Milton/Moneyfields) 22-13.

And the men’s pairs winners were College Park’s Steve Fielder and Clive Carter.

The open triples went to the Waverley trio of Ollie Mew, Justin McDonald and Mark Howe.

While the mixed pairs competition went to the Alexandra’s Marie Barber and Bob Floyd.
