EBONIE Jones has kicked off her World Championship campaign with victory.

Jones started in style at the AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championships in Taiwan on Saturday.

And now the Heart of Portsmouth (HOP) starlet’s out to continue her quest for glory in her next outing today.

The 17-year-old delivered an emphatic points win over Thailand’s champion Pattanapom Lattipromma in Taipei.

Jones dominated in her 51kg class as she stepped up to youth level for the first time.

The Drayton ace showed her quality, but also left plenty of room for improvement as tougher challenges lied in wait for her this week.

Heart of Portsmouth head coach, Q Shillingford, feels Jones has laid down a statement of intent.

He said: ‘She’s beat the Thai champion comfortably on points.

‘It was the prelim round and Ebonie has done what she does.

‘She’s off and running.

‘Eb is on the world stage and knows what is required.

‘But she is a fantastic talent and ready for anything.

‘She won well and this is Ebonie’s time to shine.’

Jones has multiple titles under her belt after tasting success in the European Championships, EU Championships, Nations’ Cup, GB Championships and titles at national level.

But Shillingford knows the prospect of representing her home city will be driving her forward.

Shillingford said: ‘Eb is out there with the national team and buzzing about the fact she’s representing her nation.

‘Not only that, she’s representing Portsmouth on the world stage.’

Meanwhile HOP staged an impressive show against Western Counties on Friday night.

Clubs from around the city and beyond combined forces to put up a stacked night of contests.

Shillingford said: ‘It was a great night and it was absolutely packed at the gym with people.

‘It was really good to see everyone turn out from all the local clubs and make it a success.’
