Sam Ellwood advanced in the Junior ABAs after a controversial win over Gosport’s Harvey Blair.
He was one of five Heart of Portsmouth boxers to advance at the Southern Counties stage of the competition.
Michael Ballingall was also a winner as he cruised to a unanimous victory over Crawley’s Liam Smith.
Ellwood did enough to get the decision in the eyes of the judges in his meeting with Blair.
HOP coach Q Shillingford thought the outcome could have gone either way and was a close battle.
The verdict angered Gosport coach Darren Blair, though, who described it as one of the ‘worst decisions he’d ever seen’ and revealed the Southern Counties secretary had registered a complaint with the ABA.
The coach would like to see Blair and Ellwood meet again. He said: ‘Harvey won by a mile. Everyone in the hall could see it. I’ve been about for 30 years and it’s the worst decision I’ve ever seen.
‘It wasn’t even close and a complaint has been put into the ABA by the secretary. Fair play, Sam got the decision but we are definitely up for the rematch.’
Ballingall looked impressive on the way to his decision over Smith.
Shillingford said: ‘It was a masterclass of the skills of amateur boxing.’
Josh Pritchard (52kg), Harley Hodgetts (54kg) and Mateus Ziolowski (81kg) all advanced after being given walkovers.
Gosport’s Ricky Pipe was also a recent winner after travelling to Southend.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight squad training is taking place at Gosport ABC on April 10 from 11am-1pm for junior and senior male and females.
