The ABA Female Championships are coming to Portsmouth tomorrow.
And a host of boxers from the area’s clubs are going for glory in this year’s competition.
The likes of Gosport, Ted Harris Boxing Academy, Stacey and Portsmouth ABC are all fielding talents who hope to go all the way to a national title.
Heart of Portsmouth (HOP) are hosting the semi-final stage of the championships at Charter Academy.
They will send five boxers into action this year.
Cody Byrnes (class 1, 40kg), Ebonie Jones (class 2, 48kg), Tilly Evans (class 3, 54kg), Joanne Barrett (class B, 60kg) and Mondana Fard (class B, 67kg) make up the HOP quintet.
The likes of Ted Harris’ Shannay Bennett (class 1, 54kg), Gosport’s Paris Dunford (class 3, 63kg), Stacey’s Ashleigh Pond (class 4, 54kg) and Portsmouth pair Charlie Southam (class 5, 69kg) and Helen Tamlyn (class C, 60kg) are also registered in their categories.
Heart of Portsmouth chief Q Shillingford is hopeful his team can make an impact.
He said: ‘It’s an honour to stage the event and it’s a chance for Portsmouth to showcase their boxing.
‘Female boxing is very popular in Portsmouth and there are other local clubs with boxers in the championships. It’s growing all the time.
‘The club is buzzing with the female entry and all the coaches have worked hard over the summer.
‘There were a few reasons we couldn’t get all our carded boxers into the championships this year, but they have all trained really hard.
‘We have the very talented Ebonie Jones from Charter Academy competing in the semis, and we hope for a lot of support for her.’
The semi-finals take place at Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy, Charter Sports Centre, Greetham Steet in Portsmouth.
Entry is £10 (16 and over) and £5 (under-16s). Boxing starts at 12.30pm.
