Ebonie Jones’ quest for world title glory ended this morning at the quarter-final stage.

The Drayton ace went down to a majority-decision points defeat in a nip-and-tuck bout with Korean champion Sukyeong Lee at the AIBA Women’s Junior & Youth World Championship event in Taiwan.

The 17-year-old Heart of Portsmouth (HOP) boxer, who is a European and EU champion, was looking to carry her power in the step up from junior to youth level.

But in the highly-rated Lee she met a difficult and cagey stylist on the big stage.

Regardless, Jones’ gutsy display drew praise from HOP coach Q Shillingford, who felt his charge was unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a tight decision.

Shillingford said: ‘I thought she (Jones) had just done enough to win it, but two of the judges thought otherwise.

‘Ebonie started well and I thought she just did enough in the last round.

‘She will be disappointed but she has become a European champion and reached the world championship quarter-finals in her first season at youth level.

‘That is some going and we are very proud of her.’
