Heart of Portsmouth’s thriving summer boxing camp is again proving a successful way to introduce children to the noble art.

Scores of youngsters have graduated through the Great Britain Boxing Awards programme hosted by the club throughout the summer holidays.

And there is still time to take part in the popular scheme which runs until the end of August.

The scheme has seen young talents go on to become national champions after taking part.

The likes of HOP’s CYP national champion Mateusz Ziolkowski and Great Britain development team member Ashleigh Pond have graduated through the initiative.

The programme, which is broken down into six parts, is open for everyone from the age of five through to 16, who can learn the basics of boxing in a fun and recreational environment. HOP boss Q Shillingford explained the plan is to get children involved in sport.

And after taking part in the awards, they can then join a boxing club where they live.

Shillingford said: ‘The GB Boxing Awards programme is a great way to engage youngsters into the sport of boxing. It’s fun and enjoyable and keeps children active.

‘Hopefully, after the school holidays, the youngsters would have had a good introduction to boxing. Then they can join a local boxing club in their area of the city.

‘We have lots of talent in the gym and a lot of stars in the making who have been discovered via the GB Boxing Awards programme.

‘We have had a really enjoyable few weeks and are now ready to progress the young people to the next stage of the awards.’
