Danny Briggs launched the Hampshire fightback after Durham had threatened to dominate the first session of the season-opening County Championship clash at the Rose Bowl this morning.
Dale Benkenstein won the toss for the visitors and wasted no time in asking to bat.
His decision bore fruit, too, as Michael Di Venuto and Mark Stoneman put on 84 for the first wicket.
Simon Jones and new signing Friedel de Wet were unable to make in-roads with the new ball for Hampshire and neither was skipper Dominic Cork.
However, up stepped 19-year-old left-arm spinner Briggs in the 23rd over to get Di Venuto caught by Sean Ervine for 42.
And then, four overs later, he bowled Stoneman (51) to head into the lunch break with figures of two for 30 from his eight overs.
Durham were 116 for two at lunch.
