Luckless Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry has been sidelined for a minimum of five weeks.
The left-hander sustained a knee injury during training on Wednesday and missed the t20 clash with Middlesex Panthers that evening.
He underwent a scan yesterday and – on the advice of a specialist – will now have surgery to remove torn cartilage from his right knee.
Carberry’s recovery time is estimated to be between five and seven weeks – which could see him ruled out until the end of August.
This is the latest blow for the England Lions left-hander, who has been in stunning form this season.
He was ruled out of a large part of 2011 through injury, only returning to fitness at the latter end of the campaign.
