Dimi Mascarenhas is pushing for a Hampshire recall after returning from the Indian Premier League.
Jimmy Adams’ men face Glamorgan at the Ageas Bowl tomorrow in the County Championship division two.
Their options have been bolstered by the arrival of Mascarenhas, who goes straight into the 14-man squad.
The 34-year-old played four matches for Kings XI Punjab, notably taking five for 25 against Pune Warriors last month.
Now he is back on the Hampshire beat having missed the opening six Championship matches of the campaign.
Mascarenhas will undergo a fitness test to assess his availability ahead of the match.
Regardless of whether he is ready to feature tomorrow, Giles White is delighted to have the veteran all-rounder back in the ranks.
He said: ‘Dimi texted me as soon as they (Kings XI Punjab) had lost to tell me he was on his way home.
‘He’s very keen to play some cricket because he has been on the fringes there for some time now.
‘He has been keen to get home, play some cricket and make himself available.
‘Dimi will be available tomorrow if he’s match fit.
‘But T20 is very different to championship cricket so we’ll see how that pans out.
‘We will check where he is but he’s obviously a quality player and we’re delighted to have him back.’
Sean Ervine is fit enough to be considered, despite suffering a shoulder injury in the last Championship match with Yorkshire.
It was his innings of 75 which guided his team to a dramatic penultimate-ball victory in the reverse fixture at Glamorgan a month ago.
Hampshire currently sit fifth in the division two table with one win from their opening six matches.
Derbyshire are the early pacesetters with three victories so far.
But White is pleased with the start his side have made to the Championship season.
He added: ‘I think we’re happy with how things have gone so far. You often look at the performances rather than the result.
‘Obviously, we want to win games but we are putting ourselves into positions to do that.
‘If the weather is kind for us and we have four good days and play good cricket, there’s a good chance we will get the right result.
‘We are hopeful that will be the case next against Glamorgan.’
Former Hampshire bowler Simon Jones is unlikely to feature for Glamorgan.
The one-time England international played in their last Championship match but is viewed primarily as a one-day player.
However, another ex-Hampshire player, batsman Marcus North, is expected to be named in the line-up.
