Hampshire crashed to their second Championship defeat of the season, losing by 117 runs to Northamptonshire at Wantage Road today.

Set 297 to win on day four of the division two clash, the visitors were skittled out for 179, with Michael Carberry (61) the only man to pass 50.

The hosts had started the day on 176 for five and added 56 to their overnight score before declaring with one wicket remaining.

Seamers Chris Wood and David Balcombe were the pick of the Hants bowlers with three wickets apiece.

In reply, Giles White’s men needed to negotiate 67 overs to secure a valuable draw.

But once Carberry departed, out lbw with the score on 135, the tail crumbled and Hampshire were eventually well beaten.
