Hampshire kept their division one survival hopes alive with a convincing victory over Somerset.

Needing just three wickets on day four of the County Championship clash at Taunton, the visitors got the better of Somerset’s wagging tail to wrap up a win by an innings and 61 runs.

Imran Tahir took two wickets, denying Alfonso Thomas (94) his century when he was caught by Jimmy Adams.

Hampshire were still made to work for their victory but the job was done when Dimi Mascarenhas had Murali Kartik lbw for 26, before Tahir removed Steve Kirby (14).

After Worcestershire’s hammering of Lancashire earlier in the week, Hampshire know there is still plenty of work left to do if they are going to pull off the great escape.

Giles White’s men take on the Red Rose county from Wednesday, knowing they cannot afford any slip-ups if they are going to avoid the drop.
