Hampshire remain rooted to the bottom of the County Championship division one table after crashing to a five-wicket defeat to Sussex.

England batsman Matt Prior hit a brilliant unbeaten 97 to take any hope of a victory away from the visitors to Hove.

Resuming this morning on 82 for three in pursuit of a target of 233, Sussex lost Luke Wells in the day’s fifth over when Dominic Cork had the left-hander caught at slip by Neil McKenzie.

From 105 for four, Prior and Andrew Hodd added 81, before the latter was bowled by Danny Briggs.

Ollie Rayner joined Prior in the middle, and the pair knocked off the remaining runs to consign Hampshire to their fifth championship defeat in eight matches.

They now need a miracle to avoid relegation into division two.
