Hampshire are still awaiting the first win of the new Friends Life t20 campaign after they went down to a second straight defeat - this time to Kent by three runs.
The Royals looked well on course for victory at the midway point in the contest as they restricted the Spitfires to 151 for five.
Dimi Mascarenhas (two for 21) and Chris Wood (two for 24) were the pick of the bowlers, while Sam Northeast (46 not out) top-scored for Kent.
But Hampshire’s reply failed to ignite, with James Vince (31), Michael Carberry (28) and Jimmy Adams (27) getting themselves in, but failing to kick on.
Neil McKenzie (18 not out) led a late rally, but it was too little, too late as they came up three runs short.
