Adam Wheater struck his maiden Hampshire century but was unable to complete a miraculous escape from the jaws of defeat at Southport.
The wicketkeeper racked up 140 on the final day of the clash with County Championship division two leaders Lancashire.
Resuming on 137 for seven – 359 runs adrift of victory – Hampshire were staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat.
And while they still lost by 122 runs, Wheater teamed up with debutant Matt Coles (68), James Tomlinson (30 not out) and 16-year-old Brad Taylor (20) to ensure the visitors restored some pride.
They added 236 runs in 59 overs before Simon Kerrigan (four for 97) sealed the inevitable home success.
