Fareham Wheelers consider speedy return to racing

The dust is just settling on round six, which the club laid on at Fairthorne Manor last Sunday.

The competition continues with round seven, hosted by VC Venta, at Sparsholt Agricultural College tomorrow.

In the meantime, Wheelers race organiser Phill Chinn is completing the paperwork on his latest event.

And he is refusing to rule out another meeting during the winter.

Chinn said: ‘This was the only one we had planned for this season but because it was a success, we think we might run another.

‘We have to see whether the figures add up.

‘If we have at least broken even, we may approach the YMCA at Fairthorne Manor to see if we can do another.

‘That would still be within the Wessex League.

‘There are a few gaps in the calendar this season where we could quite possibly squeeze another one in.

‘Obviously, we would have to approach the YMCA and the league first, though.’

Meanwhile, the Wheelers still harbour national ambitions.

It is their goal to host a round of the National Trophy Series in the future – bringing the finest riders in Britain to the south coast.

Chinn added: ‘Ultimately, to hold one of the national rounds would be great.

‘We would love to have a go at it one day.’

The only dampener to last Sunday’s racing was a crash which saw one rider taken to hospital by ambulance.

After a CT scan, he was released the same evening.

Chinn said: ‘He went over the handlebars.

‘It underlined the importance of wearing a helmet.’
