Perfs Pedal veteran Chris Opie sprinted to seventh spot in the opening stage of the Dubai Tour.

The ONE Pro Cycling star, who won the Portsmouth-based road race in 2012 and finished second last season, produced a fine finish as Marcel Kittel claimed glory from Mark Cavendish in Fujairah.

Reigning Perfs Pedal champion Yanto Barker and 2013 winner Marcin Bialoblocki were part of the team that delivered Opie to the finale.

Matt Winston, directeur sportif of ONE Pro Cycling, said: ‘Chris finished off with a fantastic seventh position.

‘We will now take that momentum and go again on stage two.’

With bonus seconds snapped up by Kittel & Co, Opie finds himself in eighth spot on general classification – 10 second behind the German from Etixx Quick-Step.

This season’s Perfs Pedal takes place on Sunday, February 14.

Meanwhile, former i-Team star Dani King crossed the line in 47th spot on the second stage of the Ladies’ Tour of Qatar.

She helped her Wiggle High5 team-mates Amy Pieters, Chloe Hosking and Elisa Longo Borghini finish third fifth and eighth respectively.

Pieters is now third in the general classification, 19 seconds adrift of leader Katrin Garfoot with two stages remaining.
