Clarence Gardens kept alive their hopes of promotion from Portsmouth Men’s League division D with a 5-4 triumph over Phoenix Southsea.

Mick Mulvery and Nick Rizzuto put Phoenix 2-1 up with legs either side of a Clarence win from Aaron Shambrook.

Clarence then took control as Terry Cronin, Michael Bowbrick and Keiran Avery rattled off three on the trot.

David Tait and John Lloyd restored parity for Phoenix, forcing a decider which Ken Brown won for Clarence.

Jolly Taxpayer C remained third in division A after a 6-3 defeat of Stag A.

Taxpayer wasted no time bagging the points as Steve Humby, Alan O’Donovan, Lee O’Donovan, Anthony Quintavalle, Barry Gibson and Shane Hore gave them an insurmountable lead.

Hore notched a 16-dart effort and two 180s and Lee O’Donovan also threw a 16-dart leg and 180, while his opponent Roy Sands registered an 18-darter and 120 finish.

Stag made the score more respectable with late wins from Duncan Cope, Dean Sumner and Joe Bridle – with Sumner and Bridle both scoring 180s.

Star & Garter moved to the top of division B after beating Druids Arms A 6-3 to leapfrog them in the table.

Star’s Dave Gisby, Kevin Hookey, Gary Hayward and Lee Stevenson earned them a 4-0 advantage.

Alan Smith and Neil Hallett halved Druids’ deficit but Paul Miller won the next leg to take the match for Star.

Ray Marsh won a consolation for Druids before Phil King added Star’s sixth.

Division C’s bottom-placed side The Royal maintained their faint hopes of avoiding relegation as they dispatched Baffins 5-4.

Royal were firmly in the driving seat early with wins from Cyril Hallett, Danny Hayden, Brian Hughes and Derek Toms.

Alan Miller bagged the points for Royal with a 100 game-shot.

But once the match was over as a contest Baffins came to life with Bruce Duff, Fred Fuggle, Ian Bates and Vic Wain all on the mark so there was only one leg separating the sides at the end of the match.

Danny Smith (Admiral Drake B) and Lee Todd (Phoenix North End B) both threw 16-dart legs, while Rob Griffin (Portland Arms) had a 17-darter and Vince Aston (Phoenix North End B), Bill Sturgess (Admiral Drake B) and Darren Barnes (Newcome Arms A) all finished legs in 18 darts.

Dave Robinson (Newcome Arms A) hit a 109 check-out, while Trevor Cawte (Phoenix North End C), Dennis Smith (Admiral Drake B), Ron Jafkins and Liam Jafkins (both Mr Pickwick) all fired in maximums.

The AGM for the summer league is on Monday, March 17.

Teams are reminded all outstanding fines must be paid by then.

It is also an opportunity to request new score pads.
