Baffins boost title push to sink Mermaid

Newcome Arms A reached the final of the Portsmouth Men’s Winter League Challenge Cup with a 5-3 victory over Admiral Drake B.

Dean Jones opened the match well for Newcome but Drake struck back through Bill Sturgess.

Shane Filleul, Darrell Manchip and John Richmond, with a 180, gave Newcome a commanding lead.

And although Danny Smith and Barry Stevens, who also hit a 180, took legs to keep Drake in the match, Darren Barnes won the decisive leg to seal Newcome’s progression.

Their opponents in the final will be Shearer Arms after they enjoyed 6-3 triump against Jolly Taxpayer C.

Wes Farminer, Steve Marsh, Sam Palmer and Jon Bramble propelled Shearer into a 4-0 lead before Steve Humby replied for Taxpayer.

But Shearer booked their place in the final as Lee Brother and Paul Wain were both on the mark.

Shane Hore and Anthony Quintavalle added late consolations for Taxpayer.

Froddington Arms and George & Dragon will contest the plate competition final.

George came from behind to beat Phoenix Southsea 5-4.

Les Weston took the opener for George.

Phoenix’s Nick Rizzuto, David Tait and Daniel Cronin then made it 3-1.

George responded with Malcolm Tilley, Anthony Plummer and Andrew Browne.

David Bishop forced a decider which Shane Plummer won for George.

Froddington’s Daniel Browne and Alan Graf Snr struck but Old House hit back through Daniel Legg and Keith Lovell.

Dan Graf and Mark Donnelly put Froddington 4-2 up.

Kalvin Legg took the next tie for Old House but Liam Emery’s 100 finish won the match for Froddington.

Dave Lock then added a sixth.

The Portsmouth Darts Series competition takes place at Fareham Working Men’s Club.

The men’s contest costs £7 to enter and offers the top prize of £250, while the ladies’ competition costs £5 with a top prize of £50.

A youth singles event will also run at the same time.
