Phoenix North End C were the giant-killers in the first round of the Denise Neale Challenge Cup as the division D side defeated top-flight Old House at Home A 5-4.

Charlie Legg opened proceedings for Old House but they soon trailed 3-1 as Mark Denham, Jim Guest and David Patourel notched legs for Phoenix.

Old House pulled one back through John Blower, before Arthur Hawkins moved Phoenix to the brink of victory.

Carl Smith and Kane Potter kept Old House in the match and forced a decider, which Joe Standen won for Phoenix.

Division B’s Stag A booked their place in the second round with a 5-4 win against Royal Standard, of division E.

David Stanley and Jon Bird both gave Royal early leads, but each time Stag immediately cancelled them out, with Roy Sands and Paul Emeney on the mark respectively.

Royal moved 4-2 up thanks to Tom Spiller and Jim Stone but that was all they could muster as Justin Henshaw, Mark Smith and Duncan Cope took the remaining legs to win the match for Stag.

Kevin Gilchrist threw an 18-dart leg for Graham Arms A as they demolished Painters Arms 8-1.

Admiral Drake B made a winning start to the season as they triumphed 6-3 over Mr Pickwick.

Rob Newland and Danny Smith put Drake 2-0 up, with Smith throwing a 17-dart leg, while his opponent, Phil Rudder, recorded an 18-darter and 180.

John Madison and Vic Smith restored parity for Pickwick.

But 13 and 18-dart legs from Jon Bramble put Drake in front, despite Kevin Wilson throwing an 18-darter.

Mason Riou’s 15-dart leg and 109 check-out put Pickwick level but Steve Musson, Barry Stevens and Sam Head won for Drake.

Graham Arms A secured a 6-3 triumph over Mermaid in division B.

Paul Skeates, Mark Mihell, Martin Simmons, Rob Knowles, Kevin Gilchrist and Nigel Young rattled off six on the trot to seal Graham’s win.

Mermaid battled on as Gary Hornby, Matthew Bolton and Ryan Knight claimed the last three ties.

Jolly Taxpayer A saw off Tap A 5-4 in division C.

Tyson Kendall, Mark Harris jnr, Mark Harris snr and Kevin Houghton put Taxpayer 4-1 up, with only Mark Hymers offering resistance from Tap.

Mark Wilson and Steve Udy pulled two legs back for Tap, before Eamonn Leightley guaranteed Taxpayer the points.

Jason Jeal took the last leg as a consolation for Tap.

Lord Chichester B made a positive start in division D with a 5-4 victory over Froddington Arms A.

Jim Stanhope and John Madgwick senior put Chichester in the driving seat. And although Paul Lipscombe halved Froddington’s deficit, wins from Dean Charman and Paul Collins gave Chichester a 4-1 lead.

Froddington’s Paul Miller won the sixth leg but John Madgwick junior took the next.

Sam Palmer and Matt Toms took late consolations for Froddington.

Oyster House beat Trafalgar 6-3 in division E. Terry Doe struck first for Trafalgar but Alex Hood and Scott Tucker replied.

Trafalgar’s John Richards won to square the match at 2-2.

But Scott Schillemore, Paul Russell, Joshua Hewitson and Joshua Owens bagged the points for Oyster, leaving Daniel Farmer to round thigns off for Trafalgar.

Tony Price (Newcome Arms B) and Steve Ockendon (Jolly Taxpayer C) threw 17-dart legs, while Steve Phillips (Old House at Home B), Dean Jones and Adam Lipscombe (both Newcome Arms A) recorded 18-darters.

Darren Barrens (Froddington Arms B) checked-out on 132, Simon Longhurst (Phoenix North End B) hit a 115 game-shot and Carl Smith (Old House at Home A) threw a 106 finish.

Rob Andrews (Electric Arms), Neil Innes (Nell Gwynne), Andy Walker (Jolly Taxpayer C), Shane Williams (Rose in June B) and Ian Smith (British Queen) all fired in maximums.
