Phoenix North End C pulled off a giant-killing feat in the second round of the Challenge Cup as the division D side dispatched top-flight Rose in June B 5-4.

Phoenix stormed into a 4-0 lead through Dean Messenbird, Pete Smith, Trevor Cawte and Tony Hedley.

Jody Gough and Shane Williams halved Rose’s deficit, before Gavin Hall sealed victory for Phoenix with a 118 game-shot.

Neil Sheppard and Ross Hughes took late consolations for Rose.

Newcome Arms A progressed to the third round with a 6-3 triumph over division C’s Pelham Arms A.

Adam Lipscombe, Paul Gibbs, Lee Smith and Paul Richmond put Newcome 4-0 up, with Gibbs and Smith both recording 18-darters.

Darren Rogers kept Pelham in the match with a 17-dart leg but Tim Hope took the next tie to win the match for Newcome.

Pelham’s Graham Kemp and Alan Poulton made the scoreline more respectable with legs either side of a win from Newcome’s Frankie Howard.

Division E’s Newcome Arms B moved in to the second round of the plate as they won 5-4 against Brewers Arms of division D.

Simon Lawrence and Ray Coombes opened proceedings for Newcome, before Brewers restored parity through Robbie Sizer and Jimmy Harris.

Tony Small put Newcome back in front, only for Dale Clements to pull Brewers level again.

Newcome went within a leg of victory as Gary Tobitt notched a win but Brewers’ Dean Kilford won the penultimate clash to make it 4-4, before Alex Adams took the decider for Newcome.

Admiral Drake A narrowly avoided defeat at the hands of lower-league opposition as the division C side came from behind to beat division D’s Barley Mow 5-4.

Mow took a 2-0 lead through Pete Roberts and David Plaiter, before Drake’s Richard Linford and Jim West squared the match.

Anthony Lepperd and Derek Lendrum took another two but Drake snatched the three remaining legs through Brian Attfield, Allen Davis and Ian Attfield to win the match.

Sam Head (Admiral Drake B) fired in a 16-dart leg, while team-mate Barry Stevens threw a 17-dart leg, including a maximum, and Mason Riou (Mr Pickwick) had an 18-dart effort.
