Holders Baffins Milton Rovers cruised into the next round of the Purcell Cup with a ruthless 11-1 demolition of division one side Cosham Park Rangers.
Baffins were denied an early lead by a superb save from Cosham keeper Robert Pearson, who stretched to tip over a Jeff Gibbs volley.
But Baffins were ahead soon after following a corner. The ball was cleared to Jake Couzens on the edge of the box and he arrowed a shot inside the far post.
It was close to 2-0 on 15 minutes. Shane Cornish fed Couzens down the left flank and raced forward to flash a drive just past the near post.
But Cornish scored a stunning second for Baffins after 20 minutes. He received the ball on the right-hand side of the area and nearly tore the net off with a fearsome drive into the top corner.
Cosham were finding it difficult to live with Baffins’ slick, passing football and it was no surprise when they went 3-0 down midway through the first half.
Tyler Yates threaded the ball through to Brandon Bowman who hammered his shot in off the crossbar.
Bowman then made it four after 35 minutes. No Rangers players picked up his run from midfield and he firmly converted Cornish’s pass from 15 yards.
Baffins’ fifth came soon after. Pearson did well to push a sliced clearance on to the bar but Cornish hooked in the loose ball from close range.
Rangers were close to getting a goal back before the break. Baffins keeper Tony Male was sold short by a back pass but managed to hack the ball of the toe of Mike Robinson as he shaped to shoot.
After a quiet start to the second half, Rangers produced their best football of the match but Male was able to save Craig Hicks’ effort with his legs.
Hicks was on target soon after, though. More good passing football set him free through the middle and he coolly passed the ball inside the far post.
Bowman then completed his hat-trick on the hour. Cornish swung in a corner from the right and Bowman had time to take the ball down and lash home from eight yards.
Cornish was next to complete his hat-trick, nodding in from a Couzens corner. But Pearson was equal to Couzens’ dinked penalty soon after, awarded when his mazy run was met with a foul in the box.
Rangers then conceded an unfortunate eighth goal. Defender Jack Cornish was unable to avoid diverting Couzens’ corner into his own net.
Baffins sub Keith Long fired in number nine and Rangers’ Cornish’s miserable afternoon was completed as he saw red for a kick on Couzens.
Couzens made it 10-1 on 80 minutes with a side-footed finish. And the rout was completed late on when Cornish steered in his fourth.
