The Hawks endured a miserable night as they were dumped out of the Hampshire Senior Cup by Sholing in a 3-1 loss at the Silverlake Arena.

The visitors took an early lead through Steve Ramsey but that was as good as it got in a desperately-poor performance against the Southern League south & west hosts.

Hawks manager Lee Bradbury made seven changes to the side that started in the 4-1 win over Basingstoke on Saturday for the tie, which was being played at the fourth time of asking after a string of postponements.

One absentee was midfielder Stefan Bailey, who has left the club by mutual agreement after losing his place recently.

The visitors dominated early possession and broke the deadlock after 12 minutes through Ramsey.

Striker Scott Jones was blocked outside the area and Ramsey drilled his low shot past the diving home goalkeeper.

The Hawks’ joy was short-lived, though, as Sholing hit back to equalise inside two minutes.

A free-kick was floated in from the right and Byron Mason rose above a static defence to thump his header past Dan Thomas. The Hawks were then found out again at a set-piece when Sholing grabbed a 36th-minute lead.

Kevin Brewster sent in a free-kick from the left and Peter Castle stole in to side-foot home from close-range.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Ollie Palmer saw his side-footed effort cleared off the line.

But Bradbury had had enough by 70 minutes and sent on Ed Harris and Sahr Kabba for Hutchinson and Nanetti.

The Hawks were becoming increasingly frustrated, though, and Lee Wort continued to be a handful for their defenders and twice almost muscled his way through.

Sholing sealed their win five minutes from time when Byron Mason crossed for brother Barry who scored with a superb volley at the far post.

Hawks: Thomas, Hinshelwood, Arthur, Hutchinson, Pearce, Woodford, Nanetti, Ryan, Palmer, Jones, Ramsey.
