GOSPORT Borough’s hopes of a huge FA Cup upset were dismantled in brutal style as Colchester strolled to a 6-3 win at Privett Park.
Alex Pike’s side were 3-0 down inside just 26 minutes as Gavin Massey, Sanchez Watt and a Freddie Sears penalty put the League One side in total command.
Justin Bennett pulled one back six minutes before the break to briefly raise hopes of an unlikely comeback.
But those hopes were dashed in first-half stoppage time when Alex Gilbey raced clean through and tucked his shot under Nathan Ashmore to make it 4-1 at the interval.
Bennett grabbed his second of the afternoon early in the second half but the fightback never looked likely to materialise and Sears bagged his second with 12 minutes left to restore the three-goal lead for the visitors.
Substitute Sammie Szmodics made it 6-2 in the closing minutes but Lee Wort then pulled another one back for Borough to ensure the home side bowed out with their heads held high.
