NEW turf ready for the coming football season has been stolen by a thief.
On Wednesday night a van driver in a hi-viz jack jacket pulled into the car park of the GDL stadium of Gosport Borough Football Club and started helping himself to rolls of turf.
At first people at the club thought he was a contractor because they sometimes work late. But a quick call to chairman Mark Hook confirmed he was actually stealing the grass which had been left out to dry before it was due to be laid today.
Mr Hook said: ‘It was absolutely brazen. They guy pulled in and at one stage checked with people that he wasn’t blocking him in.
‘When he realised people had clocked what he was doing he sped off.
‘He was well prepared because he’d covered up his number plates with cardboard.
‘Fortunately he only got away with a few rolls but it works out at around 300sq m so it’s very inconvenient. We won’t know until the rest is laid what the situation is but it needs at least four to six weeks to knit in.
‘This guy is a lowlife.’
Mr Hook called police who were there in minutes but the thief had gone.
It happened at 8.20pm last night at the Privett Park grounds. The culprit was 5ft 6in, thin, with a tanned and rugged look. He drove a white van. Anyone with information should call Gosport police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
