TWO goals in the opening 10 minutes effectively ended the Hawks’ hopes of an FA Trophy upset at 10-man Grimsby Town this afternoon.

Lee Bradbury’s men eventually went down 4-0 at Blundell Park in their second-round encounter against Blue Square Bet Premier opponents.

But it was the start of the clash that destroyed their chances of an upset, as the Mariners seized the initiative.

Grimsby centre-half Shaun Pearson opened the scoring in the second minute, nodding home Sam Hatton’s free-kick from the right.

And striker Andy Cook doubled the hosts’ advantage seven minutes later as another header flew past Clarke Masters in the Hawks’ goal.

It was 3-0 in the 36th minute when Greg Pearson glanced home from a Marcus Marshall centre.

Ollie Palmer went close to reducing the arrears after the break but his header was superbly saved by home stopper James McKeown.

Town’s Joe Colbeck received his marching orders shortly after for a second bookable offence after a crude challenge on Dan Butler.

But Cook fired past Masters on the hour mark to make it four and complete a disappointing afternoon for the Hawks.
