Horndean end miserable season on a high

Horndean turned on the style to crush Petersfield Town 5-0 in the final of the Portsmouth Senior Cup at Dover Road.

Three goals in the opening 11 minutes virtually settled the contest.

Any hopes of a Petersfield recovery were extinguished by Horndean's Billy Huntley who belted home two second-half penalties to make it five.

Jubilant Horndean boss Dave Carter said: 'I'm delighted for all my players who stayed with the club through a difficult season to end up putting on a superb display to win this cup competition.

'With so many younger players coming through, I'm sure we will do well next season.

'But before then we have at least a trophy to celebrate.'

The match threatened to boil over and referee Andy Dine took control of the situation by handing out 10 bookings.

Eight Petersfield players saw yellow while Horndean substitute Danny Sharpe was back in the dressing room long before anyone else after picking up a red card for what appeared to be an elbowing offence.

But to the credit of both sides and their management teams, animosity was shelved at the final whistle as Horndean were presented with the trophy.

Having endured a season of torment which ended in relegation from the Wessex Premier League, Horndean at least gave a display that suggests a brighter future.

Goals have been few and far between for the Deans this season but they took command of the contest with a neat header from Torr Spicer and two goals from Barney Butwell.

Petersfield pressed for a route back into the contest but the closest they came was through substitute striker Liam Sewell who was denied by Horndean keeper Jack Hampson.

Disappointed Petersfield manager Paul Ryan said: 'Conceding three early goals wrecked our hopes of winning the cup.'
