Gosport Borough Ladies have done their bit to extend the Privett Park club’s promotion party.
Days after the men’s side gained a second-successive promotion with their Southern League premier division play-off penalty-shootout win over Hemel Hempstead, the women’s side virtually sealed their own unique double.
A comprehensive 6-1 thrashing of Andover New Street on Wednesday night all but confirmed them as Southern Region League first division champions.
Only two defeats from their double-banker against third-from-bottom Banbury United on Sunday, plus a 31-goal difference swing, can deny them the chance of celebrating consecutive promotions of their own.
Midweek goals from Baker (2), Hillier, Pickering, Crene and Hoban put Borough’s Ladies in pole position for another title and dented Andover’s hopes of overhauling them to the league crown.
That sparked scenes reminiscent of the men’s side’s celebrations when they defeated Hemel Hempstead to book their place in Blue Square Bet South.
And according to manager Dave Pickering, it’s a success story that is fully deserved.
‘The ladies have worked tremendously hard this season which has seen them cover some 2,000-plus miles to teams as far as Milton Keynes,’ he said,
‘But their effort and commitment was rewarded after an opening-day defeat with a run of 14 consecutive wins before last month’s home tie verses Andover ended in a 2-3 defeat.
‘However, this defeat inspired the ladies who were on form on Wednesday night and overwhelmed a talented side.’
The ladies’ last two games of the season – against Banbury at Privett Park – kick-off at 2pm and 3.30pm.
