Moneys happy to bank best-ever finish

Third-placed Moneyfields celebrated their highest-ever Wessex Premier finish despite ending the season with a 2-1 defeat at Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

It was always going to be a tough ask for depleted Moneyfields away to a side with only one loss in nine games.

'We fielded five of our promising youngsters and Matt Barker who had missed the last eight games because of injury,' said Moneyfields manager Bobby De St Croix.

'Having already made sure of finishing third we felt our job had been done.

'We still wanted to win and the side produced a hard-working performance but their inexperience told.'

The visitors trailed 2-0 before Connor Bailey, aged 16, reduced the deficit with a tremendous strike five minutes from time.

There was still time for Owen Elias to have a fierce shot kept out by the home keeper to deny Moneyfields a 100th league goal for the season.

'It has been our best-ever in the league and we will be wanting to step up another notch again next season,' said De St Croix.

'We will definitely want to improve our home record where we lost seven games.'

Fareham Town suffered a disappointing finish as they lost 2-1 against Newport IOW at St George's Park.

'It was a rubbish game and neither side did enough to deserve to win,' said Reds manager Matt Parr.

Gary Austin netted a 65th-minute equaliser but a last-minute goal condemned Fareham to defeat.

'I have been pleased with the players since taking over and we only suffered three defeats in 18 games,' said Parr.

Horndean finished bottom of the table after suffering a 6-3 defeat in a roller-coaster encounter at Laverstock & Ford.

Deans' cause wasn't helped by a late arrival due to a crash which caused delays on the motorway and they were quickly 2-0 down.

Tor Spicer scored twice and Lenny Burney also got on the scoresheet but Horndean could never get back on terms.

'We will need to rebuild. As a side we have been great when we had the ball but made far too many errors in defence,' said boss Dave Carter.
