Borough boss makes triple swoop

Gosport Borough have strengthened ahead of their visit to Southern League south & west strugglers Abingdon United (3pm).

Manager Alex Pike swooped to sign defender Adam Camfield (Sholing), midfielder Ian Humble (Alton) and left-back Tommy McCormack (Poole) as he looks to make a final push for promotion.

‘It is now the business end of the season and it is very tight at the top,’ he said.

‘There are only four points separating the top 10 teams.

‘We have been hit by injury and suspension but instead of moaning I have gone out and done something about it.

‘These players will boost our squad during the very important run-in.

‘We all know what we are going to get from Adam (Camfield).

‘He brings the ability to take pressure off players around him because he is a good character.’

Though Abingdon are third from bottom they held high-flying Paulton Rovers to a draw last week and Pike is wary of an ambush.

‘We know to our cost that you can come unstuck if you take any team in our league too lightly,’ said Pike.

‘It is all about preparing properly and making sure we maintain our work ethic.

‘We have to remain focused and I expect a solid performance.

‘The only people who can beat us are ourselves. We know if we go out there with the right attitude our quality will win us the game.

‘The players just have to keep doing what has got them into the play-off places and we will be okay.’

All three new signings go straight into the squad, with Camfield likely to figure as defenders Aaron Cook and Brett Poate are doubts.

Cook faces a fitness test on his ankle and Poate picked up an eye injury against Christchurch in midweek.

Young striker Liam Sewell is unavailable visiting family in Spain.

Gosport Borough: Ashmore, Harrop, Jones G, Camfield, Poate, Lewis, Martin, Wylde, Wooden, Way, Kirby, Ford, Humble, Bennett, Langworthy, Woodward, McCormack, Cook
