MONEYFIELDS have been kicked out of the Wessex League Cup.

And boss Miles Rutherford is determined to avoid a repeat performance in the future.

The Dover Road outfit were given the boot after they were found to have fielded an ineligible player in their 4-2 victory over Alton Town in the third round.

New signing Sol Asajile was given the nod to play against the north Hampshire side despite having appeared for Winchester City in the competition earlier in the season.

Holes were discovered in Moneyfields’ research, leaving the club to hold their hands up and admit their guilt.

Nonetheless, having reached the semi-final stage with a 3-2 victory over Brockenhurst in the last eight, it has come as a major blow to Rutherford & Co.

‘I really fancied we would go on and win the trophy,’ said the Moneys boss.

‘It would have been some form of reward for the players who have turned up and done well for themselves and the club this season.

‘When we made the enquiries to see if Sol was able to play in that tie, everything appeared okay.

‘We went on to beat them before going down to Brockenhurst and getting a result there as well.

‘When we got the call to say the league committee had identified the fact Winchester City had used Sol in one of their cup matches, I made a point of asking him if it was true.

‘I was told he just turned up and played, not bothering whether it was a first or reserve team match – in the league or cup.

‘It has cost us and we are out of the Wessex League Cup.

‘We have no grounds for appeal, so we must get on with what is left for us to play for.

‘It is disappointing but it is something we need to look carefully at in future to make sure it doesn’t happen again.’

Despite leading the local charge in the premier division of the Wessex League – ahead of neighbours Fareham, Horndean and Hayling – Moneyfields now have just one shot at silverware this term.

They are through to the semi-finals of the Portsmouth Senior Cup and will face Gosport Borough for a spot in the final.

If they are victorious, waiting for them in the final will be either Horndean or Bob Brady’s United Services of Wessex League division one.

‘We’re not going to win the league title,’ said Rutherford.

‘Although, on our current form we should finish in the top six.

‘But hopefully we can push on and reach the final of the Portsmouth Senior Cup.

‘For the lads to get anything in terms of medals this season, that is all we have got left after getting the bad news of being disqualified for fielding young Sol Asijile against Alton in the Wessex league Cup.’
