Shaun Gale's Hawks edged through

THE HAWKS laboured to a narrow 1-0 win over Southern League division one south & west side Sholing to reach the semi-finals of the Hampshire FA Saturday Senior Cup.

Perry Ryan’s first-half header proved enough for the Westleigh Park hosts.

But it was a largely disappointing display from Shaun Gale’s strong Hawks side.

Early on, Sammy Igoe signalled the Hawks’ intent, flashing a 25-yard drive just wide.

Visitors Sholing fashioned their first chance after 10 minutes.

Barry Mason shot over, from just outside the box.

Hawks centre-back Chris Holland was fortunate when Tyronne Bowers’ cross skimmed off his head, into the arms of keeper Lyall Beazley.

Hawks grabbed the lead on 15 minutes.

Perry Ryan rose above the visiting defence to thump home a header from Igoe’s corner.

Sholing looked vulnerable from flag-kicks and it took a superb one-handed save from Hookway to keep out Ollie Palmer’s header.

At the other end, Beazley needed two attempts to deny Bowers, after neat build-up play.

Hawks responded as Steve Ramsey twice fired powerful efforts towards goal, his second spinning off Hookway and just wide.

Sholing got stronger as half-time approached and Dave Marden powered a header narrowly over the bar from a corner.

Seconds after the break, Marvin McLean spurned a wonderful chance when he dallied and lost possession.

It was a sluggish start to the second half from the Hawks.

Beazley came to their rescue, saving with his legs from Lee Wort.

Byron Mason then sent a looping volley just wide.

And the dangerous Mason’s next effort flew just over the top.

Hawks tried to pick up the tempo as the half went on but Perry Ryan’s curling free-kick, which narrowly missed the target, was the closest they came to extending the winning margin.
