Pompey Legends to face Portchester
Guy Whittingham
AFC PORTCHESTER will take on a Pompey Legends XI to raise funds for injured defender Phil Turrell.
The game will boost coffers for the highly-rated player who has broken his leg for a second time in Portchester colours.
Complications with Turrell’s recovery have left his football career in doubt.
Pompey Legends travel to Portchester on Sunday for the match at Wicor Recreation Ground (1pm).
Former Blues stars Guy Whittingham, Alan Knight, Paul Wood, Paul Walsh and Guy Butters have been pencilled in to appear, along with Paul Hardyman, Andy Awford and other former Fratton heroes.
Portchester boss Glenn Bridgman is hoping for fine weather and a good crowd to help back the cause.
‘We are very much a community club and it follows that if any of our lads need help, then everyone gets involved in one way or another,’ said Bridgman.
‘Unfortunately Phil Turrell has had a rough time lately and deserves the support of the community, so I’m hoping for a good attendance.
‘Our new clubhouse will be open, so come along, bring the kids and enjoy what we have to offer.
‘As a club we are very grateful to the Pompey Legends who seem to be forever helping out locally and giving much in support of those who have suffered from various injuries and illnesses.
‘For those fans who have not visited us recently, we now have a very nice enclosed ground with floodlights and a near-perfect playing surface, so I would urge you to come along and see for yourself how we have grown.
‘You will be welcome to spend your time in the lounge bar and enjoy a pint before watching the match and afterwards enjoy chatting to many of the Legends.’

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 01:18 PMWell done to the Pompey old boys... I used to live in Portchester for many years, played for Portchester as a youngster, before playing for Fareham and Waterlooville.. Remember the castle grounds well, but haven't been back there for over 20 years so it has probably changed a lot.
