Bentley's double is perfect tonic for Gosport

Two outstanding pieces of finishing late on from Warren Bentley secured the points for the hosts from the National League South clash.

Chris Flood had netted for Gosport before the visitors levelled with a contentious penalty.

But Bentley’s double then settled the contest and boss Pike was delighted with the reaction to the Maidenhead defeat on Saturday.

He said: ‘That was just what was needed after losing our opening game.

‘We were well worthy of the win with the chances we created.

‘Warren Bentley could have ended with a hatful of goals, Truro just couldn’t handle him.

‘We didn’t start well and were sloppy, giving the ball away in bad areas.

‘After we grew into the game, we were braver and passed the ball a lot better.

‘Consequently our midfield were able to impose themselves on the game.

‘Playing Joe Oastler as a defensive midfielder allowed Mike Carter, Aaron Dawson and Ben Harding a lot more freedom going forward.

‘Their penalty was extremely dubious and lesser players would have let that get to them.

‘We didn’t and that is to the players’ credit.’

Gosport made one change to the side that lost 3-0 at Maidenhead.

Defender Sam Pearce replaced striker Ben Wright who dropped to the bench.

Borough almost paid the price for a slow start when Niall Thompson fired a golden opportunity wide after seven minutes.

The hosts, however, broke the deadlock in the 25th minute.

Chris Flood knocked the ball in from close range after Bentley had a shot blocked.

Midfielder Mike Carter was getting through a lot of good work for the hosts as Borough grew in confidence.

But Truro equalised four minutes into the second half with a contentious penalty.

Pearce appeared to get the ball first in a challenge on Thompson in the area.

But referee Lee Venamore pointed to the spot and Thompson easily fired home his spot-kick.

On 72 minutes Borough regained the lead with a superb piece of opportunism from Bentley.

Tom Bird’s thunderous long range shot bounced out off the goalkeeper and Bentley headed in the loose ball.

Bentley sealed the win four minutes from time with another excellent piece of finishing.
