Gosport Borough boss Alex Pike is looking forward to phase two of his pre-season plan at Horndean tomorrow.

The Privett Park manager fielded a side made up of triallists and summer signings in a 1-0 loss at Bashley on Tuesday.

None of Gosport’s first team squad from last season featured in the game.

But they will be back in action at Five Heads Park.

Crucially, tomorrow’s match also gives Pike a chance to take a second look at some of the triallists who impressed in their first outing on Tuesday night.

Midfielder Sam Roberts, from Salisbury, and centre-back Anthony Giles, from Fulham, both made a positive impression with good performances against Bashley.

Pike is now keen to see how potential signings integrate with his first-team squad.

That will help him make a decision on whether to bring in new recruits.

Pike said: ‘It’s difficult to judge someone over 90 minutes.

‘I have got to make a decision on their futures based on whether they are better than what I have got – players I have worked with for a long time.

‘We had a number of young players trying to impress, who caught the eye at Bashley.

‘I was quite impressed with Sam Roberts, who we have taken from Salisbury. Anthony Giles also did well.

‘It’s good to see the work ethic and to see how they fit into a team pattern.

‘I’m definitely keen to have a second look. They deserve another game.

‘That’s the process I wanted to take.

‘First to see them in a game and then to see how well they integrate with the first team squad.’

Former Sholing midfielder Mike Carter made a big impact with a strong performance on his Gosport debut on Tuesday.

Fellow summer signings Stuart Green and Jack Odam were also handed their first outings.

Horndean boss Dave Carter will be without new recruit Lewis Stockford who is away on holiday. But he will have Jack Warren back.
