BRETT POATE is hoping to use his Cup disappointment with the Hawks to help spur Gosport to glory.
The defender will line up for Alex Pike’s Borough tomorrow at Slough Town (3pm), as they chase a place in the first round proper of the FA Cup.
Back in the 2007-08 season, Poate saw a chance to appear in the game of his dreams cruelly snatched away.
He was a key member of the Hawks side who stormed into the fourth round of the competition.
But suspension cost him his place when the Westleigh Park outfit took on Premier League giants Liverpool at Anfield.
It’s a pain that still runs deep but Poate is hoping a Gosport win over Slough can help provide an antidote.
He said: ‘Unfortunately, I played in every round that year and then got suspended.
‘I’m still gutted to this day about missing it – it would have been the biggest game of my life.
‘I did travel up to Anfield to watch the lads but will always be gutted about missing it.
‘You do move on, but I’m not getting any younger.
‘It would be nice to get another chance like that, though.’
Success in the fourth qualifying round tie would, in itself, be a landmark for Borough.
Poate added: ‘The club have never been in the first round proper before so that’s a big incentive for us.
‘The Cup run is one that has attracted a lot of attention, and there’s also the money part of it for the club, so it’s a game we’re all looking forward to.
‘I’ve been lucky enough to play in the first round about five times before.
‘It’s nothing new for a few of us – it’s all about enjoying the magic of the Cup.’
