Gosport Borough saw off the challenge from Fareham Town to progress in the Hampshire Senior Cup with a 2-0 derby win at Privett Park last night.

Rory Williams opened the scoring and substitute Justin Bennett clinched victory in the final minute.

Borough started the second-round contest well at Privett Park.

They went in search of the early advantage but Fareham keeper Luke Douglas saved well from Brett Poate and also stopped Tom Dunford’s follow-up.

Gosport kept the pressure on and did find a way to beat Douglas on seven minutes.

The Fareham No1 saved Williams’ fierce drive, however the loose ball fell back to the Gosport striker, who made no mistake from 10 yards out.

Borough then had to replace Dan Woodward who went off injured and Sammy Igoe stepped off the bench.

Fareham striker Graham Lindsey was denied at the far post as Borough keeper Nathan Ashmore swiftly cut out a low cross.

Ashmore was back in the Gosport side after being dropped by manager Alex Pike and missing the past three games.

Borough threatened to add a second before the break.

Dan Wooden created an opening for Poate who saw his shot cleared off the line by Lee Tigwell.

Next Wooden cut a path through the Reds defence but his superb shot was expertly pushed around the post by the impressive Douglas.

Borough continued to dominate their rivals early in the second half.

Sam Pearce headed inches wide and Williams sent a shot just the wrong side of the far post.

Poate and Igoe then combined to present Jamie Brown with a great chance but he shot well over from six yards out.

The lively Williams went closer but was denied by the upright.

Pearce also struck the woodwork moments later with a far-post header that smacked the bar.

Seconds before the final whistle Borough made it 2-0.

Substitute Bennett met a Dunford cross to turn the ball past Douglas at the far post.
