The Hawks have swooped to sign giant Argentinian defender Juan Cruz Gotta to boost their late push for the Blue Square Bet South play-offs.

The six-foot-five central defender goes straight into the Hawks’ squad for their clash against Maidenhead United at Westleigh Park on Saturday.

‘He (Gotta) has been training at the club for a few weeks and his international clearance has just come through,’ said manager Lee Bradbury.

‘The player has great technical ability and is equally comfortable on either left or right foot.’

The 22-year-old started his career in his native Argentina in the academy sides of Social Parge Ramon Maddon, Boca Juniors, Atletico River Plate and Defeensores de Belgrano.

He then had a spell in Europe when he had trials with Young Boys (Switzerland), Benfica (Portugal), Majorca and Real Madrid (both Spain).

In 2007 he signed for Albenga in the Italian League before returning to his homeland to join Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, who he left in January last year.

In recent months he has had trials at Rampla Juniors (Uruquay), Pescara (Italy) and with both Brentford and Pompey.
