Hayling United believe a great escape is on after a thrilling 3-0 win at Laverstock & Ford in the Wessex League premier division.

Dan Martin notched a brace and Tom Reay added a third to earn the bottom club three vital points.

‘It’s nice to be celebrating a win for a change,’ said United boss Lee Paul.

‘I knew it was coming because of the way we have played in recent games.

‘We are still in a tough position but if we can keep developing each time we go out there we can do it.

‘The players are up for the challenge, particularly after this result.’

Martin gave United the lead after 18 minutes with a bicycle-kick after a clearing header fell to him in the area.

Just before half-time United’s Rob Tambling was shown a straight red card after a scuffle with two defenders.

But Martin increased United’s lead, cutting in from the left and firing into the bottom corner.

The home side had their goalkeeper sent off for handling outside the area and Reay sealed United’s win with a third goal after good work from Lenny Burney.

Moneyfields showdown at Romsey Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
