The Hawks recorded a 3-0 success against Horndean at Five Heads Park in their opening pre-season friendly of the summer last night.
Boss Lee Bradbury fielded a different Hawks side for each half.
They took a 2-0 lead in the first period, with new recruit Josh Huggins on the mark.
Perry Ryan also scored in the opening 45 minutes.
A penalty from Scott Donnelly then completed the win in the second half.
It was a good occasion for both teams.
Horndean relished the chance to take on the ambitious Conference South side.
They certainly acquitted themselves well, with a determined performance.
Deans boss Dave Carter was pleased with his men.
He said: ‘It was as we expected – a great workout for us obviously.
‘We didn’t embarrass ourselves, we kept good shape.
‘Last season we had a big injury list but we are getting a few boys back to fitness.
‘We know we won’t play a tougher team than that in our league this season and we held our own in there.’
Carter was delighted with the work ethic shown by his team – especially so early in pre-season.
He added: ‘The boys worked really hard as a team.
‘It’s a lot different to what we had last year.
‘They got one goal from a set piece, one goal from open play and one goal from a penalty at the end.
‘We’ve played Clanfield and won 2-0 and put in a good performance in this game so it’s good.’
Horndean continue their preparations for the upcoming Wessex League season when they face Gosport Borough at home on Saturday.
It promises to be another good contest for the Wessex League side, who have several key players still to come back from holiday as the squad takes shape.
