HORNDEAN suffered a 2-0 defeat at Newport (IOW) to bow out of the Wessex League Cup last night.

The hosts struck with a spectacular effort early on.

After a flowing five-man move, Josh Hibberd’s cross was met by striker Tom McInnes who netted.

The Deans responded with a quick break, presenting Billy Huntley with a chance but he fired straight at Newport keeper Ben Self.

On 25 minutes, Louis Bell then saw his curling shot deflected just the wrong side of the post.

Horndean continued to press forward and striker Torr Spicer escaped the home defence, only to lose out to Self, who swept the ball clear.

Self was in fine form and kept out Nathan Paxton’s close-range effort which seemed destined for the net.

Before the interval, Newport’s Corby Ricketts wasted a chance to double the advantage when he shot wide from a good position.

After the restart, Newport extended their lead, thanks to a defence-splitting run from John McKie, who set up Dan Vale to touch the ball into the net.

To their credit, Horndean refused to accept defeat.

Bell was denied by Self before Horndean boss Dave Carter introduced Brad Groves, Grant Blackmore and Tom Brown from the bench.

The trio were lively but Newport had done enough to seal their place in the next round.
