Brett Poate has his sights set on Pompey as Gosport Borough bid to keep their FA Cup dream alive.
The Southern League premier division side travel to Slough Town on Sunday in the fourth qualifying round.
Victory would guarantee a maiden appearance for Borough in the first round proper.
And with Football League clubs entering the competition at that stage, Alex Pike’s side have the potential to draw one of the round’s big guns.
That has got Poate dreaming of a derby date with Pompey.
But the Portsmouth-born defender, who was part of the Hawks side that took the competition by storm in 2007-08, knows it’s dangerous to think too far ahead.
He missed the Hawks’ fourth-round clash at Liverpool due to suspension and knows Borough must focus on Slough.
‘I’d love to get Pompey away in the first round,’ said Poate.
‘It would be a nice experience to play them. That would be ideal but I don’t want to think about it too much yet.
‘We’re all looking forward and concentrating on Slough. We beat them 4-0 about a month ago but we can’t take anything for granted.’
Gosport will know who they could face in the first round before Sunday’s 3pm kick-off.
But rather than that being a distraction, Poate believes it may work in their favour.
‘If we pull one of the bigger teams out, that would be an extra incentive for us,’ he said.
‘A few of the older players have played in the first round.
‘The younger players haven’t but if we pull one of the big guns out, hopefully they will not be affected on Sunday. Hopefully we’ll rise to the occasion and win.’
