MATT JONES’ penalty saw Fareham edge Wessex premier division champions Poole in a 3-2 win at Cams Alders.

Fareham started the brighter and in the second minute, Mark Cotton hit the post after he got his toe to a Jones free-kick.

Minutes later, Tony Harrop held on to Poole’s first chance as Dan Cann unleashed a free-kick from the edge of the area.

Fareham took the lead seconds later when Lamin Dibba was caught on the ball and Sean Dark smashed it into the roof of the net.

The lead did not last long, however, as Poole captain Michael Walker headed in an equaliser.

The goals continued to flow as Tom Jeffes put the league leaders ahead by lobbing Harrop from 15 yards inside the 10th minute.

Both teams continued to press towards half-time and two minutes before the break, Jimmy Cuthbert crossed for Dark to finish from two yards and make it 2-2.

Early in the second half, a mazy run from Cuthbert forced Dibber into a clumsy challenge, giving the referee no option but to give a penalty.

Jones coolly converted, sending keeper Nick Hutchings the wrong way.

Elsewhere, Pabs N’Doye scored with the last kick of the match to hand Moneyfields a 1-0 win at Romsey Town.
