Fareham Town saw off Cove 6-5 on penalties after a 4-4 draw in the Hampshire Senior Cup first round tie at Cams Alders last night.

Jon Wilson, Sam Knight and Mark Wheeler were on the mark for the Reds as the teams ended normal time level at 3-3.

Ashley Tattersall then put Fareham ahead in extra-time.

But Cove struck back to force penalties – only for Matt Parr’s men to finally finish the job.

Fareham started the game well.

Bryn McKie’s free-kick was pushed away by Cove keeper Aiden Upward and Wilson headed home the loose ball for 1-0.

Cove striker Jake Baxter nearly responded but his shot smacked the crossbar.

Wilson’s pace became more and more of a factor for Fareham as the half went on.

Twice he teed up Mark Cotton, who was unable to convert from good positions.

In the second half, Fareham’s Knight doubled the advantage after coming off the bench.

But Cove cut the deficit with a Toby Janaway shot.

Lifted by the goal, the visitors struck again on 70 minutes to level at 2-2.

Baxter rifled the ball home to wound the Reds.

But Parr’s men showed their determination and Wheeler’s long-range effort flew past Upward for 3-2.

Cove were not beaten, though, and made it 3-3.

Jacob Pierce got the last-gasp goal and there was still time for Fareham’s Graham Lindsey to see his soft penalty saved.

That meant the tie went into extra-time and the teams traded blows again.

Tattersall fired Fareham into a 4-3 lead.

But Cove’s Len Robson made it 4-4 to force a penalty shootout.

Parr’s men then held their nerve to seal a 6-5 win on penalties.

Lindsey, Josh Cripps, Wheeler, Pete Murphy, Knight and Ian Humble all netted to earn the Reds a trip to Privett Park to face Gosport Borough in the next round.

Fareham: Douglas, Pitman, Martin, Wheeler, Humble, Lewis, McKie, Cripps, Lindsey, Wilson, Cotton. Subs: Murphy, Tattersall, Jones, Knight, Howard.
