A battling performance couldn’t prevent Fareham Town from slipping to a 2-0 Wessex League premier division defeat at Blackfield & Langley.

In a mundane opening 45 minutes, the home side broke the deadlock seven minutes before the interval.

The Reds fell further behind just before the hour mark and struggled to make any impression against the home defence.

The visitors’ best chance of the game came in the 15th minute when Dan Jackson curled wide of the target.

Fareham boss Steve Stone was proud of his players.

‘Blackfield are a top side and we played well against them,’ he said.

‘We gave a good account of ourselves – if we keep players fit we can build on this.’

Robbie Tambling grabbed a second-half double to help Horndean to a 3-0 win over Folland Sports at Five Heads Park.

Dan Hayes gave the home side a 25th-minute lead with Tambling opening his account in the 66th minute.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 77th minute and Tambling sealed the win with a last-minute goal.

AFC Portchester travel to Brockenhurst tomorrow night (7.45pm).
